INGREDIENTS

  • 2/3 cup warm water
  • 1 packet (1/4 ounce or 2 1/4 tsp) active dry yeast
  • 1 cup whole wheat flour
  • 1 cup bread flour
  • 1 tsp salt

DIRECTIONS

  1. Mix the water and yeast together in a large mixing bowl.
  2. Mix in the flours and salt then knead the bread by hand in the bowl for about 5 minutes.
  3. Loosely cover the bowl and let sit for about 2 hours.
  4. Form the dough into a ball and place on a piece of parchent paper then use a serrated knife to cut 3 shallow slits on the top of the dough and set aside.
  5. Place a dutch oven, without the lid, into the oven and preheat the oven to 475°F. Allow the dutch oven to get hot in the oven for at least 20 minutes.
  6. After the dutch oven has been heating up for 20 minutes take it out of the oven.
  7. Carefully lower the dough ball with the parchment paper into the dutch oven then place the lid on the dutch oven.
  8. Place the dutch oven back in the oven and reduce then oven temperature to 425°F then bake the bread for 25 minutes.
  9. Take the lid off the dutch oven and continue to bake the bread for 10 more minutes.
