Simple Homemade Crusty Bread

Servings: 4 to 6
Total Time: 3 hours
Recipe by: Frankie

Ingredients

2 tsp (1 packet) active dry yeast
2 cups bread flour plus extra
1 cup lukewarm water
1 tsp kosher salt
2 cups hot water

Directions

1. In large mixing bowl mix together the yeast and the 2 cups of bread flour. Stir in the water and salt and mix until well combined, dough will be sticky. Lightly flour the inside bottom and sides of a large clean bowl. Transfer the dough to the bowl and cover loosely. Let sit in a warm place to rise for 2 hours.

2. Sprinkle a little flour onto a baking sheet and set aside. Uncover the dough and sprinkle the dough and your hands with some flour. Take the dough out of the bowl (make sure your hands are well floured) and pull the sides of the dough underneath itself to form into a dome shape. Lay the dough dome flat side down onto the baking sheet and sprinkle the top with just a little more flour. Let sit, uncovered, for 30 minutes.

3. Preheat the oven to 450°F. Pour the hot water into a small oven safe pan and place on the bottom rack of the oven.

4. Using a serrated knife cut a shallow X into the top of the dough. When the oven has preheated place the dough on the top rack of the oven and bake until cooked through and browned on the outside, 20 to 25 minutes.

hi, I think there was a typo of sorts in the recipe. it lists 1 cup of water in 2 different spots, one being hot and the other lukewarm. if you're going to make this bread, just do one cup of lukewarm water for better results.

Hi gennika,

Thanks for commenting.

Sorry if it's a little confusing, The 2nd cup of hot water doesn't go in the recipe it goes in a baking dish in the oven to help steam the bread.
