Salisbury Steak with Mushroom Gravy

1 lb ground beef
1 egg
1/2 tsp garlic powder
i tsp cooking oil
1 lb sliced mushrooms
1/2 cup diced onion
2 cups beef broth
4 TBSP unsalted butter
1/4 cup all purpose flour
salt and pepper


1. In a large mixing bowl combine the ground beef, egg, garlic powder, 1/2 tsp salt, and 1/4 tsp pepper. Divide into 2 balls and press into patties, about 1/2 inch thick and 5 to 6 inches in diameter. Cover patties and refrigerate for 1 hour.

2. In a large skillet heat the oil over high heat until oil begins to smoke. Cook patties 2 minutes per side. Remove patties and set aside.

3. Add the mushrooms, onion, 1/2 tsp salt, and 1/4 tsp pepper to the pan and cook about 5 minutes. Stir in the butter and flour and continue stirring until well combined and no white flour remains.

4. Stir in the beef broth and scrape the bottom of the pan to release any stuck on bits. Bring to a boil then reduce heat to low. return the patties back to the pan and spoon gravy over top. Cover and simmer 15 minutes. Add salt and pepper to taste.
