Directions

  1. MAKE THE MEATBALLS:

  2. In a large bowl mix the meatball ingredients with your hands until well combined. Form mixture into 1 inch balls (about 16), cover and refrigerate at least 1 hour to allow flavors to meld.

  3. Preheat oven to 425°F. Bake the meatballs on an ungreased baking sheet for 20 minutes or until cooked through. Remove meatballs from the oven and set aside.

  4. MAKE THE SAUCE:

  5. Stir together the sauce ingredients, cover and refrigerate until ready to use.

  6. MAKE THE DOUGH:

  7. In a stand mixer or large bowl mix the yeast, honey and water. Let stand 10 minutes or until it begins foaming.

  8. Add the 1 TBSP oil, salt and flour and mix until well combined and dough pulls away from sides of bowl.

  9. Use a little oil to lightly cover sides and bottom of a separate large bowl.

  10. Knead the dough 10 minutes by hand or about 5 minutes using a stand mixer with a dough hook.

  11. Form the dough in a ball and place in the oiled bowl. Cover and put in a warm place to rise, about 30 minutes.

  12. MAKE THE STROMBOLI:

  13. Preheat the oven to 450°F.

  14. Place the dough ball on a large piece of parchment paper and roll out to a rectangle roughly 13x18 inches. Spread half the sauce (other half of sauce will be used for dipping) evenly over the dough leaving a 1 inch border around the edges. Sprinkle the mozzarella evenly over the sauce and distribute the meatballs evenly on top of the mozzarella.

  15. With the long side of the dough facing you roll one side up to the middle and roll the opposite side up to the middle slighlty overlapping the first side you rolled up. Lightly press the middle to seal the two sides together. Fold the short sides up to seal the ends.

  16. Lightly oil a baking sheet and place the Stromboli seam side down on the oiled baking sheet. Brush the top of the Stromboli with the tsp of oil and sprinkle on the grated parmesan cheese. Bake in the preheated oven for 15-18 minutes or until golden brown.

  17. Cut the Stromboli into slices and warm up the remaining tomato sauce for dipping.
