Place the beans and about 6 cups of water in a large saucepan over medium-high heat and bring to a boil.
Cover the pan and reduce the heat to medium-low, simmer until beans are very tender, about 1 hour and 15 minutes.
Drain the beans then place them in a food processor or blender along with the garlic, jalapeno, onion, cilantro, cumin, lime juice, 1 tsp salt, and 1/4 cup water.
Blend until smooth then transfer to a serving bowl and season with additional salt if needed.
