Preheat the oven to 425°F. Lightly flour a baking sheet and set aside.
In a large mixing bowl stir together the flour, baking soda, salt, caraway seeds, and raisins.
In a separate bowl whisk together the egg and buttermilk.
Pour the liquid mixture in with the dry mixture and stir until well combined and a dough is formed.
Lay the dough mixture onto the baking sheet and form into a thick circle roughly 7-inches in diameter. Use a serrated knife to cut a shallow X in the top of the dough.
Bake in the preheated oven until browned on top and sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom, 20 to 25 minutes.
Allow the bread to cool for about 20 minutes then slice and spread with butter or top with cheddar cheese.
