INGREDIENTS

  • 1 package (2 1/4 tsp) active dry yeast
  • 2 TBSP warm water
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 4 TBSP softened unsalted butter

DIRECTIONS

  1. Preheat the oven to 400°F.
  2. In a small bowl mix together the yeast and warm water. Set aside.
  3. In a large mixing bowl stir together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  4. Add the buttermilk, softened butter, and yeast mixture to the bowl and stir until well combined and a dough is formed.
  5. Knead the dough by hand on a lightly floured work surface for about 3 minutes.
  6. Roll the dough out into a rectangle about 1/2-inch thick. Fold the dough rectangle in half and roll out into a rectangle 1/2-inch thick again. Fold the dough in half again and roll it out into a rectangle 1/2-inch thick one more time.
  7. Use a round biscuit cutter (or an upside down glass) roughly 3-inches in diameter to cut out rounds of dough (about 9 biscuits in total). Place the dough rounds on a baking sheet at least 1-inch apart from each other.
  8. Bake in the preheated oven for 15 to 17 minutes or until the tops and bottoms of the biscuits are browned.
